ISP Model
Carrier-neutral IDCs get many carriers offering services at this ring (i.e. Equinix, S&D)
ISP-neutral IDCs get many ISPs at this ring (i.e. Equinix, S&D)
Raw Colo space providers offer basic space and power at this ring (i.e. DRT)
A data center that provides multiple ISPs services is preferable to one with only a single transit provider.
When you buy services from an existing colocation provider, you base your decision in part in who is available to purchase transit services from, and who is there to peer with. The colocation provider has already built a population so you can start immediately with you business.
When you build your own, it may take months or years to get a diversity of providers in to the data center. Until then, your data center is an island.
This aspect was also difficult to assign a monetary value making the build vs buy decision white paper very difficult to complete.
Some ISPs that might be immediately available at a colocation center selling Internet transit services.
